Diving in, holding breath

Faced with a somewhat desperate situation regarding their starting pitching, the Milwaukee Brewers have been proactive in making moves to ease the crisis and return to contending mode in 2010.Along the way, they have been forced to take some risks, both financially and in terms of personnel.The process began with the trade of shortstop J.J. Hardy, who was destined to make way for prospect Alcides Escobar at some point. By sending him to Minnesota for young, underachieving - yet inexpensive - centerfielder Carlos Gomez, the Brewers shed Hardy's salary and also that of veteran centerfielder Mike Cameron, a savings of around $15 million.
