Postal substation talks launch next week

A U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman told me this afternoon that 10 Waukesha businesses have shown interest in opening Post Office substations to sell stamps and post mail in their businesses.Postal reps are supposed to meet Feb. 19 with the interested parties to hash over details and determine who remains interested.Potential sites include convenience and video stores, banks, and service and health care businesses, the spokeswoman said. The quest for new substations, also known as contract postal units, began in December when Aurora Pharmacy, across from City Hall, announced it would no longer be the city's one and only substation. That possibility was bad news to those who used the substation to avoid congestion at the main Post Office on Broadway.A point of contention with Aurora was its belief it would need to spend a sizable amount to get a new postal meter. The postal service now pays for meters, construction of a postal counter and signage, the spokeswoman said.Businesses awarded government postal contracts also receive compensation in an amount that's yet to be determined, the spokeswoman said.Aurora is now interested in continuing its sub station, the spokeswoman said.
